Course Expectations

Online Portion:
You are expected to read each chapter in the OEC 6th Edition, review the online modules as well as any videos and supplemental handouts and presentations provided by your instructor, and practice your knowledge with the learning exercises and discussions. At the end of each module, you will take the practice exam.

Each instructor-led skills session may be taught by a different instructor. Some will lead a discussion on the discussion board for their specific session. You are expected to respond to each discussion board topic on within the skills session portion of the course. These exercises are meant to help you apply your knowledge; they should take less than 15 minutes to complete. Your discussion response is due prior to the corresponding face-to-face class.

Practical Skills Sessions:
You are required to attend every practical class. These classes are imperative to your success on the final exam and as an OEC Technician. These classes will contain a combination of skills demonstrations, skills practice, skills checks, and practice scenarios. Classes may also review important concepts related to the book and online module materials.

Final Exam:
The final exam is composed of a written exam and a practical exam. The written exam is 100 questions, and you must make 80% to pass this portion of the exam. The questions for this exam are taken from the same bank as those used in the online practice exams. Both exam components will be proctored by the instructor team. The written test will be taken online, either over a virtual meeting or in an in-person setting. You will need to have internet and computer access and will be given a code to access the test. The practical exam is divided between four skill checks and two scenarios. You must pass each of these six elements to pass the practical exam.  Once you have passed OEC, you will receive a certificate of completion as well as an online OEC card and active patroller status. After that, you may be given additional on-hill instruction and training.
